Rua Kenana to be pardoned

Tuhoe Prophet Rua Kenana is to receive a Statutory Pardon.
Minister for Maori Development Te Ururoa Flavell has been working with whanau for the past three years on the Statutory Pardon which will wipe the Rangatira's convictions when he was wrongfully arrested and imprisoned in 1916.
Minister Flavell says it's just a matter of time before Rua Kenana, his whanau and followers get justice.
" I've got agreement from the whanau, I'm just waiting for their final tickoff, for the Statutory Pardon looking at (taking it) to a venue of their choice and basically it's all about removing the stigma all associated with their tupuna." says Minister Flavell
Minister Flavell adds however, that in spite of the stigma associated with the wrongful arrest and conviction the whanau are not seeking anything more than a Crown apology.
"They don't want money what they do want is a declaration on the part of the Crown that they (Crown) stuffed up, that the historical record proves it and they want in the way of a formal pardon they want removed ofrom ver the head of Rua Kenana and there's a couple of others and those who are followers of Rua Kenana and his family," says Minister Flavell.
Rua Kenana established the Ihiraia at Maungapohatu and a thriving farming community before his arrest in 1916. Several other followers of Rua Kenana and who suffered the same fate will also be pardoned.
