Maori Party hopeful Pasifika agreement will boost it’s party vote
The Maori Party hopes it will get a boost in its party vote through an agreement with a new Pasifika political movement.
Co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell says the founders of One Pacific have decided getting close to their Maori kin is a way to advance their own political leverage.
He says along with the endorsement of the Maori king and the high calibre candidates it is running in five Labour-held Maori seats, the new partnership will be a game changer.
"So today we got up to Auckland to sign an agreement which sets out a desire to work together for common good, an acceptance of the kaupapa of their Maori Party as being as close as you can get to what they believe in, a desire to work together to up the vote, participation of Pasifika people in the electoral process, and also to put candidates up in some of the general seats and support us with party vote," Mr Flavell says.
The confirmation Ngati Porou board member Mei Taare will stand in the South Island Te Tai Tonga seat means there is now a strong team in place.
