Te Putahitanga shares Whanau ora stories
South Island Whanau Ora commissioning agency Te Putahitanga o te Waipounamu will this week showcase initiatives it has funded through the year.
Chief executive Helen Leahy says the three day symposium at Nga Hau e Wha Marae in Otautahi is an opportunity for the groups to celebrate their successes, as well as learn from other funded initiatives.
Among the 18 whanau featured will be Blenheim’s Kaikaiawaro Charitable Trust, which ran land based initiatives including as bee husbandry and reconnecting whanau to ancestral land blocks; Invercargill’s Koha which worked to enable people with disabilities to achieve independence; and the Tu Pono: Te Mana Kaha o Te Whanau programme to address family violence.
Ms Leahy says Te Putahitanga does not impose a programme but allows whanau to identify and meet their own needs.
She says commissioning allows for a more direct relationship with whanau and places them at the centre of their own pathways towards prosperity.
