Dame Nganeko never forgotten for giving voice to kaitiakitanga

Manurewa MP Louisa Wall says Dame Nganeko Minhinnick will never be forgotten for what she did to give tangata whenau a formal role in managing the nation's resources.
The Ngati Te Ata leader died last week aged 77.
Her funeral was held this morning at Tahuna Marae near Waiuku.
Ms Wall says Dame Nganeko was encouraged by her kaumatua to talk about the relaitonship Maori have with the environment.
Her Manukau Harbour claim to the Waitangi Tribunal and her subsequent work on kaitiakitanga provided the framework for tangata whenau and mana whenua to have a role in legislation like the Resource Management Act.
"She was just such a staunch, steadfast, beautiful woman. There was just such an aura about her so we are going to miss her greatly. She has left an amazing platform and legacy from which all of us have an opportunity to continue to hold the crown and the systems accountable and the process not only to the treaty but also specific mana whenua groups based on our relationship with our whenua and our maunga and our awa. She will never be forgotten," Ms Wall says.
