Maori lose sway on TVNZ programming
The Green Party wants Television New Zealand to rethink its proposal to axe its Maori commissioner.
Co-leader Metiria Turei says while the service says it is committed to broadcasting Maori content, it’s hard to see how it will thrive without someone having dedicated responsibility for Maori programming.
TVNZ outsourced production of its Maori and Pacific programming in 2015.
She says it highlights the risks to Maori and public interest content when there is not a true public television broadcaster, and the Greens would reinstate the TVNZ charter scrapped by National in 2011.
