Time up for Te Tii welcomes
The annual turmoil at Waitangi’s Te Tii Marae could be over, with the Waitangi National Trust moving to hold the powhiri for official Waitangi Day guests on the Treaty Grounds.
The decision was made at a hui on Friday called by Waitangi Day Organising Committee chair Pita Paraone.
The decision is a snub to the committee at Te Tii Marae, whose handling of this year’s welcome caused Prime Minister Bill English to stay away.
Northland MP and New Zealand First leader Winston Peters refused to step on to the marae because of a media ban.
