Iwi invited to work with council
Gisborne District Council is setting up a new governance forum to operate between the council and iwi.
Five councillors and mayor Meng Foon were last week nominated as establishing members of the Local Leadership Body.
Two members each from Rongowhakaata, Ngai Tamanuhiri, and Te Aitanga a Mahaki will be picked by those iwi to represent Turanga iwi.
Mr Foon says Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou has a separate working relationship with the council through the joint management agreement.
The aim of the body is to contribute to the sustainable management of natural and physical resources, while recognising the traditional relationship of iwi to their ancestral lands, water, wahi tapu and other taonga.
