Tino rangatiratanga for elite in Maori Party bill

Te Taitokerau MP Kelvin Davis says people in his electorate are overwhelmingly against the changes to Maori land law proposed in Te Ture Whenua Maori Bill.
The bill is set go through its committee stage, which will be the only chance to scrutinise the changes added after it went through the select committee review.
Mr Davis says he's concerned about the participation rules, which means for many blocks, status changes can be made on the say so of just 10 percent of owners.
"So the Maori Party talks about this as good for tino rangatiratanga and Maori being able to utilise their land. The reality is there is an element of truth and they are playing on that element. Some Maori owners can have tino rangatiratanga when the tino rangatiratanga of all the other owners is just disregarded," he says.
