App for tots addresses reo gap

The developer of a new Maori learning app says he developed it because he saw a gap in vocabulary acquisition resources for children five and under.
James Porter from Te Atiawa, Ngapuhi, and Ngati Kahu launched the first Papapa app this week as a free, drag-and-drop activity game introducing children and their caregivers to 20 everyday Maori words.
More modules will be available for purchase in future.
He says many New Zealand families here and overseas want to learn some te reo Maori, especially for use with their young children, but don’t have any knowledge themselves and are unsure where to begin.
Most mobile apps are for older children already fluent in te reo Maori, as opposed to absolute beginners or younger children”.
