Gift of aroha remembered

A pou is to be unveiled on a Waihi farm tomorrow to mark a relationship formed between two tribes in times of adversity.
The ceremony is part of an open day to mark the transition of control of Te Aroha Aggregation, a 480 hectare dairy farm, from the Maori Trustee Te Tumu Paeroa to the 2000 owners.
Advisory trustee and owner Brad Tatere says the land has been under the Maori trustee since 1917, but it was gifted by Ngati Tamatera to elements of Tuhourangi displaced by the 1886 Tarawera Eruption.
"It’s something the owners are very conscious of and certainly the trustees of the day are vey conscious of and we wanted to ascknowledge that gift way back in 1886 bu having this pou carved. Something that will forever signify our relationship with Ngati Tamatera," he says.
Brad Tatere says Te Aroha Aggregation is leased to sharemilkers, but the trust is pleased it is now able to take an active role in decisions.
The open day runs from 10am to 3pm tomorrow at 381 Old Tauranga Road in Waihi.
