Pasifika celebration of New Zealand becoming Aotearoa
It’s Pasifika time, with tens of thousands of people expected at Western Springs tomorrow to celebrate the cultures of Aotearoa and the Pacific.
Reverend Mua Strickson-Pua, who has been involved with the festival since its humble beginning 25 years ago, says it has grown organically to become the largest celebration of its kind in the world.
"It’s a time to celebrate achievement, remember the old ones who have gone on before, the matua, the ancestors who contributed in their humble ways of giving us something and then us not realising there were others who walked before us, there were others who loved our people, there were others who wanted to celebrate our reo, our language, our dance, our expressions, our contribution to this land called New Zealand becoming Aotearoa," he says.
