Bay of Plenty iwi are working together to restore mussel populations in the Ohiwa Harbour.
A recent survey of the harbour by scientist Kura Paul-Burke found almost none of the traditional mussel bed areas exist today.
Lyn Riesterer, the deputy chair of the Ohiwa Harbour Implementation Forum, says iwi have suspected for some time that a key traditional kaimoana resource is almost lost, but there is considerable community and stakeholder support for its restoration.
Forum chair Tipene Marr, a Bay of Plenty regional councillor, Tipene Marr, says the Ohiwa community wants the harbour to retain its title of the ‘jewel of the Bay of Plenty’.
Farmers are making significant investments in riparian fencing, wetland construction and biodiversity protection, while school and community groups are active in pest control, bird monitoring, rubbish collection and habitat restoration.
