Youth funds to grow Maori leadership
Social entrepreneurs Shay Wright and Travis O’Keefe have secured $150,000 for a programme to help grow future Maori leaders from Northland and Auckland.
Youth Minister Nikki Kaye says the funding will allow their organisation Te Whare Hukahuka to put 55 young Maori through its Ka Eke Poutama programme to prepare them for governance roles on the boards of organisations such as schools, councils, NGOs, iwi and community organisations and businesses.
Ms Kaye says she wants more young Maori sitting at board tables so they can help shape decisions that affect schools, businesses and communities.
The Ministry for Youth Affairs will contribute about $50,000 through its Partnership Fund, with other funding coming from a range of partners including Te Puni Kokiri, ATEED, The Southern Initiative, Hapai te Hauora Trust, Ngati Whatua o Orakei and other iwi organisations.
