Waitangi Tribunal starts Taihape inquiry
Hearings start next week for one of the last major historical inquiries to be conducted by the Waitangi Tribunal.
The Taihape (Wai 2180) district inquiry will open at Rata Marae near Hunterville with a pohiri on Monday morning.
The kaupapa for the first hearing week will focus on the oral and traditional history of the district and its peoples.
Technical witnesses Tony Walzl, David Armstrong and Peter McBurney will present summaries of their research and undergo cross-examination.
The claimants will also present evidence related to their traditional history.
The second hearing will be held jointly with the Porirua ki Manawatu (Wai 2200) panel at the end of May.
The Taihape inquiry is presided over by Judge Layne Harvey, and the panel includes Professor Pou Temara, Sir Douglas Kidd, Dr Angela Ballara and Dr Monty Soutar.
