Jobs no path out of poverty in unequal NZ
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says the tenth Salvation Army state of the nation report shows rising inequality means that jobs are no longer the path out of poverty.
She says the document makes disturbing reading, with child poverty rates remaining high and housing in crisis.
That's despite economic growth meaning more jobs and more people in work.
"People might be moving from benefits into work but that work is not getting them out of poverty. That work is low paid, it is insecure. Families are still really struggling even though they are getting a pay cheque because work is not acting as the lever out of poverty like it ought to," Ms Turei says.
She says some people are getting rich out of the economy, but a huge number of ordinary families are falling through the cracks.
