Descendants share Lindauer portrait stories
One of the most popular exhibitions at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, The Maori Portraits: Gottfried Lindauer’s New Zealand, is closing soon.
Director Rhana Devenport says more than 80,000 visitors have been through the show, which closes on Sunday February 19.
She says it is highly unlikely this many of Lindauer’s portraits will be seen together again in our lifetime.
The final two weekends of the exhibition include additional programmes and events to enrich the visitor experience.
They include guided exhibition tours, demonstrations by ta moko artist Rangi Kipa and a discussion of their tattoos featuring in Lindauer’s portraits, advice on researching whakapapa, and descendants of Lindauer's subjects sharing stories about their ancestors.
