Marlborough salmon farms on the move
Iwi, community, government industry representatives have recommended six salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds be relocated.
Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy is seeking public comment on the proposal, which affects farms owned by New Zealand King Salmon.
He says the proposed sites, five in Pelorus Sound and one in Tory Channel, are further from residential properties and in areas with stronger water currents, which would reduce the environmental effects on the seabed.
The proposal and any submissions will be considered at public hearings in April by an independent panel of three resource management experts including former Environment Court judge Professor Peter Skelton, Blenheim lawyer and Waitangi Tribunal member Ron Crosby and former Resource Management Law Association president Alan Dormer.
