Kupu fit for dictionary
Words used when talking about fitness and exercise have been included in a revised edition of Toi Tangata’s Toi te Kupu Maori health dictionary.
The dictionary was first published in 2014 as a collaborative effort with the NZ Heart Foundation to normalise te reo Maori in and around kai.
Toi Tangata project manager Mason Ngawhika says it’s hard for people to have conversations with tamariki and mokopuna about food and health if they don't know the appropriate kupu, as switching to English can lose the nuances of the meaning.
The inclusion of a physical activity section was an intuitive next step as nutrition and physical activity often go together.
The collation of kupu required extensive consultation with reo experts and writers.
