Tertiary educators cast wide net
Educators have gathered in Tamaki Makaurau for the fifth Maori tertiary education hui – Tuia Te Ako.
Joe Te Rito from Ako Aotearoa, the National Centre for Tertiary Teaching, says it’s a chance to hear about what works nationally and internationally.
He says what happens at the front of the class makes a big difference on how students learn and even on whether they stick around, so it’s important to have a workforce that is culturally competent to stand in front of Maori and Pasifika students.
He says Ako Aotearoa is extending its scope beyond universities and polytechnics.
"There’s a huge industry training sector out there, the vocational area where there are a lot of Maori people, so our brief for Ako Aotearoa is to improve the learning outcomes for adult learners," Dr Te Rito says.
Tuia Te Ako has also drawn in hapu and iwi who are keen to develop education strategies for their members.
