New Maori singer songwriters on the rise with Te Kauta
New Māori Music from Te Kāuta!
Aspiring singer-songwriters Wharemako Paewai and Te Kiwa Goddard – aka TE KĀUTA – are launching their new singles “Tetipea” and “Taku Hei Mokimoki” this coming Saturday 26th November 2016.
The launch will be livestreamed from 5pm to approx 6.30pm on TE KĀUTA’s facebook page [[www.facebook.com/TeKauta]www.facebook.com/TeKauta] and anyone who loves Māori music and Te Reo Māori is invited to join the online celebration!
“Tetipea” and "Taku Hei Mokimoki” are acoustic and soulful love songs, featuring beautifully laid back vocals. The intimate nature of the compositions is exquisitely and passionately expressed i roto i te reo Māori. Simple instrumentation and catchy melodies perfectly complement the lyrics of love and adoration. The singles were funded by Te Māngai Pāho and co-produced with award-winning Māori Music Producer Maaka Phat McGregor at Suite As Studios in Titahi Bay, Porirua.
Wharemako and Te Kiwa previously played together in a reggae band then made the decision to form TE KĀUTA and compose Māori music. As products of a Māori speaking upbringing, through Kōhanga Reo and Kura Kaupapa Māori, it was a way to give back and to demonstrate their continued commitment to Te Reo Māori me ngā Tikanga. As Teachers they found it was also a great way to motivate students to be proud of their native tongue and its uniqueness.
The name “Te Kāuta” (“Kitchen”) pays tribute and respect to all of the hard workers who take care of marae across Aotearoa. “Kā tika a muri, ka tika a mua” – “If all is well at the back, all will be well in the front.”
Te Kauta’s goal for the future is to release an album filled with Māori music which they can share with everyone – in particular those who have an appreciation for Māori language.
