Cars taken off ancestral maunga

The summit of Maungakiekie – One Tree Hill will be blocked off to cars from next year.
The tihi of Maungarei/Mt Wellington, Owairaka/Mt Albert, Puketapapa/Mt Roskill and Takarunga/Mt Victoria in Devonport will also become pedestrian-only spaces, with allowance for cycles.
There will be automated barriers to allow access to limited mobility vehicles.
Tupuna Maunga Authority chair Paul Majurey says the measures will increase public safety and enhance pedestrian access while respecting the cultural values of the maunga.
He says there has been overwhelming public support for the pedestrianisation of Maungawhau and it is pleasing to see families safely walking the roads there in great numbers.
Mr Majurey says every day hundreds of people walk up to the summit of Maungakiekie, rising to more than 600 at weekends, and the number of near misses between cars and pedestrians is increasing.
