Seismic testing sparks exploration backlash
Green MP Marama Davidson says the Auckland Council has made the right call with its vote opposing offshore oil and gas exploration and drilling.
It was one of the first votes of the new Phil Goff-led council.
The previous council had rejected a similar motion on the casting vore of then-mayor Len Brown.
Christchurch, Kaikoura, Dunedin and Gisborne councils have also voted against drilling.
Ms Davidson says it should sent a message to Statoil and Chevron, who are about to start seismic testing off the East Coast.
"The new world needs to not have oil. We need to find a different way. Your seismic testing, your exploration, your drilling, none of that is going to help our future generations or our earth. Aall of our focus needs to be finding another way without any delay," she says.
Meanwhile there was a protest yesterday in Wellington against the imminent arrival of the world’s largest seismic blasting ship, the Amazon Warrior.
