Government chips in to Ngai Tahu stargazing venture

The Government has agreed to co-fund the new International Astronomy Centre to be built on the shores of Lake Tekapo.
It will provide $3 million towards an iconic $10 million building planned by the Earth and Sky Limited Partnership, a joint venture between astro-tourism promoter Earth & Sky and Ngai Tahu Tourism.
Partnership chair Graham Kennedy says Lake Tekapo is already considered among the best locations in the world for stargazing, but many of the 1.5 million annual visitors to the area pass through without looking up.
As well as catering to those who stay overnight, the centre will offer daytime visitors virtual reality and interactive science and education displays.
