Letele love prevails over stubborn jailers
The brother of Vicki Letele says going to the media was the last hope for getting her home before she died.
Ms Letele was paroled yesterday to serve the rest of her sentence on home detention.
Dave Letele says ever since she was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer the family have battled to get prison officials to show compassion.
"They’d made the decision that she was to stay in prison. The medical staff at Corrections said they could look after her and it was quite apparent they couldn't but they were quite stubborn on this. Our biggest hurdle was convincing Ray Smith, the boss of Corrections, they couldn't look after my sister adequately, that she needed to be at home with her family," he says.
Mr Letele says the system is inhumane, and it is likely there are other prisoners who should be out who are being left to rot inside.
