Maniapoto board wins negotiation mandate vote

A poll on Ngati Maniapoto’s historic claims has come out 72 percent in favour of the Maniapoto Maori Trust Board taking over the job of negotiating a settlement.
The board put its hand up for the job after a group which has been coordinating the claims before the Waitangi Tribunal failed to secure a mandate.
The fast-track process has fired up the King Country iwi, with opposition coming from a breakaway faction within Ngati Rereahu and also from supporters of maverick board member Rongo Wetere, who wants the iwi to fight the crown through the courts.
Chair Tiwha Bell says the trust board has heard the concerns and it will continue to engage with submitters while a deed of mandate is drawn up.
