Strong contenders for reo awards

A record 38 finalists in 13 contestable categories have made the cut for the Maori Language Commission’s annual Nga Tohu Reo Maori national Maori language awards.
Te Taura Whiri chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui says the awards get harder to win each year, with the entries setting new benchmarks for innovation and excellence in te reo Maori.
Some individuals and organisations, including Stacey Morrison, Callaghan Innovation, and Radio New Zealand, are finalists in more than one category.
Callaghan, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and the Ministry for Justice are contenders for Te Reo Maori Central Government Champion, while the business category is between Air New Zealand, Core Education and Whitebait Restaurant.
Radio New Zealand, Maori Television and Tuwharetoa FM impressed most with their contributions to Maori Language Week.
The individual champion will be either Taini Drummond, Carlin Shaw or Manuel Springford, and the junior champion is between Taini Drummond, Aaron Koopu and Ngai Tauira.
This year’s ceremony to be hosted by the Maori Language Commission and Te Reo o Taranaki at New Plymouth on November 11.
