Naati landowners keen to stop slips
Maori landowners will be among those to benefit from a $2.4 million injection of erosion funds into the East Coast.
Associate Primary Industries Minister Jo Goodhew says her ministry has been working with Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou and Gisborne District Council the increase the uptake of the Erosion Control Funding Programme, which has been running since 1992.
The latest round will fund work on 1438 hectares spread over 37 properties.
About 80 percent will go to replanting indigenous scrub and tree cover, with the rest subsidising planting of poplars and willows or forestry."
Ms Goodhew says the programme will bring environmental benefits to the region’s infrastructure, waterways, hill country farms, and higher-quality floodplain land through reducing sediment run-off and improving the resilience of the land to severe weather events.
