The MWWL who open their conference this morning at 10.00am . This is the 64th conference.
The league arose out of a desire on the part of Maori women throughout Aotearoa for an organisation that would essentially be theirs. A potent force which could play an intergral part in facilitating positive outcomes for Maori people through enabling and empowering Maori women and whanau – Perhaps the birth of Whanau Ora?
The league began in September 1951 at Wellington's Ngati Poneke Hall with some 90 women delegates.
A constitution was formally adopted and Princess Te Puea (founding Patron) accepted an invitation to become patroness. Dame Whina Cooper was elected President.
