Long wish list for Maori land service

A Te Puni Kokiri roadshow aimed at hearing what landowners want from the new Maori land service will be in Auckland tomorrow.
The service is part of the Government’s reform of Maori land law and will take over many functions now done by the Maori Land Court.
Willie Te Aho, who has been promoting the reform on behalf of the Iwi Chairs Forum, says any service must be by Maori for Maori.
"It must not be a government agency and the government ensure that this service is the best hub for getting services to our people so it becomes the point of contact, the point of excellence for directing government agency, third party agency services into our people on their lands," he says.
Mr Te Aho says services that will be required under the new Te Ture Whenua Maori include alternate dispute resolution and the collection and maintenance of land data.
Tomorrow’s Maori Land Service wananga are at Hoani Waititi Marae in West Auckland from 10am to 2pm and Whaiora Marae in Otara from 4pm to 8pm.
