Boarding house slumlords profit from housing crisis
A Waatea TV investigation of south Auckland boarding houses has revealed that while the lack of affordable housing in Tamaki Makaurau is causing heated debate, the poor quality of boarding houses the homeless are forced into is largely going unnoticed.
Waatea TV reporter and editor Claudette Hauiti says boarding houses don't have to meet any minimum operational standards or warrant of fitness.
Tenants are in a legal grey zone, and they are paying slumlords to live in squalor.
"Tenants aren't covered by any tenancy tribunal rules or regulations when it comes to paying their bond which can be something up to $3000.00. For a single room you can pay between $180 – $400 a week or around $200 – $450 for a double room," says Claudette Hauiti
