University challenged to return $10 land

Victoria University has been challenged to return the former Wellington teachers’ college site to local iwi.
The university bought the Karori campus from the government for $10, but says it’s now surplus to requirements and could be sold for housing.
Speaking at the Social Movements, Resistance and Social Change conference at the university over the weekend, Te Atiawa academic Leonie Pihama from Waikato University offered to reimburse Victoria its $10.
She said if the university was not using the land for the purpose it was designated, it must give the land back to the iwi.
Otherwise it was being complicit in the ongoing colonisation and confiscation of Maori land.
Dr Pihama says the $10 price for land the university says could be worth up to $20 million is in contrast to the $23 million Te Atiawa was told it would have to pay if it wanted the Pekapeka Block at Waitara returned.
