Bill would stop Maori land grab
Green MP Catherine Delahunty has presented a petition with almost 5000 signatures calling on the Government to support her bill to stop Maori land being compulsorily acquired for public works.
The bill is likely to get its first reading next week.
Ms Delahunty says the Public Works Act has been used time and time again to alienate Maori from their land, leading to the struggles for Bastion Point, the Raglan golf course and to writer Patricia Grace’s fight to protect her land from the Kapiti Expressway.
She says as the petition has been taken around the country, people have shared their own stories of losing Maori land.
She says the bill gives parliament the opportunity to ensure historical injustices aren’t repeated.
