Trans Tasman takes another run at South Taranaki Bight

South Taranaki iwi are being dragged back into battle as an Australian-owned company makes yet another bid to mine the seabed.
Ngaruahine and Ngati Ruanui were prominent in the fight two years ago that stopped Trans Tasman Resources getting permission to mine ironsand from a 66 square kilometre strip South Taranaki Bight.
Now the company has made a new application to the Environmental Protection Agency covering the same area.
Kiwis Against Seabed Mining chair Phil McCabe says nothing has changed since the agency ruled there were too many unknowns to let the project go ahead.
He says the company is trying to wear down public opposition, but it is having the effect of making resistance stronger.
