Rangitane votes for Dannevirke to Palliser settlement
Rangitane o Wairarapa have received sufficient support from members to allow their Treaty of Waitangi Settlement to go ahead.
Lead negotiator Jason Kerehi says Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson and Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell have now approved the deal, which will be signed at Dannevirke on August 6.
The settlement will provide financial redress of $32.5 million and the transfer to iwi of seven Crown-owned sites of cultural significance.
Mr Kerehi says it’s crucial, not only for the iwi’s cultural and economic future but also for the wider communities.
Rangitane leader Manahi Paewai says being acknowledged as tangata whenua of the region is vital because that has been confused by some, including the Crown, for generations.
