Time for iwi to pay social dividend

Iwi leaders can expect a call to start putting their hands in their pocket for Whanau Ora.
The vision laid out by Deputy Prime Minister Bill English to Te Pou Matakana’s second Whanau Ora conference yesterday was co-investment, with the money for whanau ora eventually coming not just from government but from business, social enterprises and iwi.
Te Pou Matakana chief executive John Tamihere says the social issues of their people haven’t received the same attention from iwi leaders as farms, forests and fisheries.
"In the iwi leaders forums you would think that issue would be front and centre of every agenda. I guarantee you, it will be on the front of the agenda very shortly, all the time. Those iwi balance sheets are going to have to stand and deliver as much as the crown ones," says John Tamihere.
