The Department of Conservation is rejecting suggestions an Australian mining company is probing for gold under conservation land.
A group including Ngati Hau Anti-Mining Group and MineWatch Northland say an Evolution Mining rig is parked on the edge of DOC land on Puhipuhi mountain north of Whangarei, drilling at an angle.
Spokesperson Tim Howard says it shows protected conservation land is being targeted for mining.
A DOC spokesperson says the group needs to check its coordinated.
He says the rig is on a licensed exploration site beside a commercial forest, away from any conservation land.
