Maths programme culturally responsive
Ngai Tahu has teamed up with Massey University and the Ministry of Education to pilot a new culturally responsive maths programme for Shirley School.
Hangaia Te Urupounamu Pangarau Mo Tatou is based on the ‘Bobbie Maths’ programme devised by Professor Roberta Bobbie Hunter of Massey University and involves students working together to solve maths problems.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says a similar approach started last year in three Porirua East decile 1 schools and is already showing positive results in mathematics achievement, a reduction in bullying and an improvement in learner well-being and identity.
She says funding for the Shirley programme comes from a bequest from Ngai Tahu kaumatua Laurie Loper.
