Kapa haka energises our communities

The numbers of kapa haka roopu lining up for next year’s national competitions is continuing to grow, with Auckland set to deliver five teams to Te Matatini.
Organising committee chair Kawariki Morgan says just three teams from the super city made it to last year’s event in Otautahi, but 17 roopu have registered for this weekend’s Tamaki Makaurau regional finals.
He says it’s a sign of the commitment whanau have to kapa haka, and also the emergence of kaumatua groups.
"It’s not until you call on all those kaumauta roopu from different marae like Orakei, Te Tai Tonga at Manurewa Marae that you do really get that sense of, yes the community is buying into this event and this is what we always hoped to do. It is definitely something that energises our communities," says Kawariki Morgan
