Wairoa film champion dies

Shock and sorrow at the sudden death of the chair of the Wairoa Maori Film Festival, Huia Koziol.
Mrs Koziol died yesterday aged 80.
Ella Henry, a former chair of Maori screen and television group Nga Aho Whakaari, says whaia Huia devoted much of her life to creating opportunities in the creative arts for Maori storytellers.
She will be remembered for the festival she created with her son Leo that brings lovers of Maori and indigenous film every year to Wairoa and Nuhaka.
"She was the organiser and Leo was the hands and legs and one felt very much her kaha and her wairua in the event, it was always about bringing people to their rohe, which they both loved dearly, and sharing the experience of going to Wairoa as well as being able to watch the films," Dr Henry says.
Huia Koziol is being taken to Kahungunu Marae in Nuhaka. Her funeral service will be held on Thursday at the Latter Day Saints Chapel in Nuhaka.
