Ngapuhi team explains new negotiating model
The Ngapuhi Hapu Engagement Team is back on the road seeking comment on how the tribe’s treaty settlement negotiation process can be overhauled.
Its draft report on the subject released a fortnight ago calls for an end to the Tuhorohuku name and structure, including specific seats for urban Ngapuhi, kaumatua and kuia.
Instead decisions will be made solely by hapu representatives, who will be elected or appointed by processes that will be decided by each hapu.
To help people respond to the report, there will be a hui in Whangarei this afternoon, Kaikohe tomorrow for kaumatua and kuia, Mangakahia and Kaeo on Friday and Waikare and Ohaeawai on Saturday.
