GG leaks to cover PM’s red face
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says the Prime Minister is cheapening the appointment of the next Governor General by using it to mask a political embarrassment.
Leaks have emerged over the past week that the next representative of the Queen as head of state will be lawyer and professional director Dame Patsy Reddy.
Mr Peters says whatever her credentials for the job, John Key breached traditional practice by not consulting with other political parties.
He says it's a disgrace her name has been leaked ahead of any formal announcement.
"Absolutely appalling and he did it because he's facing a huge controversy over the misuse of taxpayers’ money on his defamation case against (photographer) Bradley Ambrose, and secondly a terrible defeat for his faddish and fetish choice of flag, which the announcement is coming tomorrow. It's unbelievable how this guy cannot take a defeat on the chin," Mr Peters says.
