Chance for say on smoke free volcanoes
The Tupuna Maunga o Tamaki Makaurau Authority wants to hear what Maori think of its Integrated Management Plan for the city’s volcanic cones.
It includes a proposal to ban alcohol and smoking from all 14 maunga.
Chair Paul Majurey says the plan covers not just the land returned to iwi through the collective settlement but the designated view shafts.
There’s pressure in some suburbs to develop in ways that would block views, which the authority is resisting through the Unitary Plan process.
Mr Majurey says the integrated plan is a significant step.
"When you think back to the legacy councils and the different approaches that were taken to the care of the tupuna maunga, it was never done in a unified or a cohesive manner. The Maunga Authority and the Tamaki Collective settlement has allowed that. The Integrated Management Plan sets out our aspirations as the Maunga Authority representing Mana Whenua and all of Auckland for the future of these tupuna maunga," he says.
The Integrated Management Plan is available on the authority’s website and in public libraries.
