Minister for Maori Development Te Ururoa Flavell
Maori perspective missing from national broadcaster
The Minister for Maori Development says he'll seek changes to Radio New Zealand to boost its coverage of Maori issues.
Te Ururoa Flavell says a three month survey by Maori radio umbrella group Te Whakaruruhau showing Maori stories made up just 0.1 percent of RNZ National content highlighted an unacceptable situation.
He told Te Whakaruruhau chair and Radio Waatea broadcaster Willie Jackson, he's asked Broadcasting Minister Amy Adams to make changes at the charter level for both Radio New Zealand and Television New Zealand
"From a Maori Party perspective, from a Maori development perspective there must be a reflection of our people, of our language, of our culture across any national broadcaster. That should be stock standard to discussions on any national broadcaster and your report has told us that is not up there," Mr Flavell says.
