Pomare role in Te Tiriti celebrated
Ngati Manu will be out in force at Karetu Marae near Kawakawa today to mark Pomare Day.
It’s the anniversary of their ancestor Pomare II signing the Treaty of Waitangi at Opua.
Organiser Arapeta Hamilton says it’s also a chance to acknowledge the alliance forged in the 1830s between Pomare, Te Tirarau of Parawhau and Kawiti of Ngati Hine, which was a significant factor in events around the signing of Te Tiriti.
