Ancient principles scoured for modern lifestyle
Maori involved in physical education and nutrition have gathered at Te Wananga o Raukawa in Otaki to looks for ways traditional philosophies and knowledge can help today’s Maori live longer and healthier lives.
Leonie Matoe from the wananga’s Nga Purapura lifestyle advancement centre says the Toi Tangata Hui-a-Tau will consider attributes like resilience, fortitude, stamina and endurance.
She says it’s important to address where Maori are now.
"The world is very different form when we could roam being free range kids, free range tamariki mokopuna. Urban environments pose a real challenge for us – how do we carry some of those ancient principles of tama tu, tama ora, and how do we make them alive and real, relevant and useful for whanau who live in urban settings." Ms Matoe says.
The Toi Tangata Hui a tau heard about approaches like Ihirangi Heke’s Atua Matua framework and the Flourishing Whanau project developed by Massey University’s Te Kani Kingi, Chris Cunningham and Meihana Durie.
