QSO for Judge Hingston
Maori Land Court Judge Heta Kenneth Hingston has been appointed a companion of the Queens Service Order for services to Maori and the judiciary.
As a judge of the Maori Land Court between 1984 and 1999 Judge Hingston was notable for making the original decision in the Ngati Apa case on customary ownership of the foreshore and seabed, which was upheld by the Court of Appeal in 2003.
During his 40 year legal career he has also been a judge of the Cook Islands High Court and Court of Appeal and Chief Justice of the High Court of Niue.
He has also been a legal advisor for the New Zealand Māori Council, the Te Arawa Māori Trust Board and the Tuhoe/Waikaremoana Māori Trust Board, as well as acting for Ngati Pikiao for the Kaituna River Claim and for the Māori landowners in the Rangatira Block Royal Commission.
Mereana Crawford received a Queens Service Medal for her long service to the community at Uawa-Tolaga Bay.
Kataraina Hodge got a QSM for her work with Ngati Raukawa, particularly its treaty settlement and the conservation of the Waikato River.
Anne Marie Rotarangi-Kendall received a QSM for her work with Maori and the community, including around south Auckland and Papakura Marae and with Mokai Marae and the Marotiri-Pureora Forest Hapu Cluster.
Gisborne kaumatua Te Uranga O Te Ra Tuwhakairiora (Toti) Tuhaka receieved a QSM for services to veterans and the community.
