Waka traditions guide leadership
Waka voyaging traditions have inspired a new book on the sort of leadership needed in today’s world.
Wayfinding Leadership: GroundBreaking Wisdom for Developing Leaders by Dr Chellie Spiller, Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr and John Panoho is being launched this evening at Auckland University’s Business School.
Dr Spiller, who has 30 years corporate experience in tourism, marketing and finance, says the genesis of the book came when she was on a Fulbright scholarship at Harvard University.
She felt many of the leadership ideas she was hearing about were lost at sea, and she was drawn back to consideration of Polynesian wayfaring traditions.
Dr Spiller says one of the most important values Maori prize in leadership is humility, because it is the quality that would hold a navigator to account.
