Shelly Bay on fast track housing plan
Port Nicholson Settlement Trust has won approval for a special housing area at its flagship property, a former air force base on the Miramar Peninsula.
Developer Ian Cassels’ Wellington Company and the trust will co-develop up to 300 houses and commercial buildings at Shelly Bay, which was bought in 2008 by Taranaki Whanui claimants.
The development will include the wharf, which may allow future ferry services to Wellington’s CBD.
Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says Shelly Bay is one of the most beautiful places in the region and will be a great place to live, work and play.
A Housing Accord between Wellington Council and the government means planning applications in Special Housing Areas can be fast tracked, with approvals for greenfield developments within six months and brownfield developments within three months.
