Hapu to manage Hokianga swimming spot
Hapu around Waihou Valley in the Hokianga have come together to manage the popular Forest Pools swimming spot on the edge of the Puketi Omahuta Forest.
Kaumatua Brendan Barnett says the land was taken under legislation without proper consultation or consideration of his family’s rights and interests as mana whenua and kaitiaki.
While the Department of Conservation manages the area, restructuring means it is handing over the management of such public spaces to hapu and community group.
Te Mauri o Waihou, which was formed to manage the site, is holding a Picnic at Forest Pools Whanau Day tomorrow starting at 11am.
People will be able to see the new and improved public facilities including new toilet facilities, landscaping activities, and mural painting by children and graffiti artist Chile.
