Settlement docos win oral history award

Documentaries on the Tuhoe and Ngai Tahu settlements have won this year’s oral history awards from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
Murray Hemi, the manager of the ministry’s treaty settlements histories project, says this year’s awards coincide with the 175th anniversary of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, 150 years of Maori Land court operations and 40 years since the establishment of the Waitangi Tribunal.
He says both recipients are contributing to the richness of the korero on the Treaty and provide important iwi historical perspectives.
BWP Productions Home received its award for a documentary by Jan Beiringa on the 2013 Tuhoe settlement, which is part of a planned series of planned long-form documentaries on Tuhoe revitalisation and growth.
Purakaunui Block Incorporation’s oral history was drawn from interviews Ngai Tahu kaumatua about the changing nature of the treaty relationship in their community over the 20 years since their settlement.
